MALOLOS MAYOR CITES
UNPRECEDENTED SUPPORT OF LOCAL
GOVERNMENTS TO VP NOLI’S HOUSING PROGRAM
29
September 2005
A mayor from Bulacan yesterday cited the
unprecedented support of various local governments to the national
housing program presently being spearheaded by Vice-President and
concurrent Housing and Urban
Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) chairman Noli ‘Kabayan’ De
Castro.

Malolos Mayor Danilo ‘Danny’ Domingo cited
the exceptional support given by various local governments of Bulacan
to the nationwide shelter program for millions of homeless Filipinos.
According to Domingo, De Castro served as a
‘unifying factor’ in the housing industry and tremendously inspired the
local governments to participate in the shelter program.

“It is only now that local governments are
one in pursuing a genuine housing thrust and this is because they
believe in the leadership of the Vice President,” Domingo said.
Through De Castro, Domingo said, the dreams
of many marginalized Filipinos to acquire their own house and lots are
finally coming true. He said past housing programs failed to achieve
what HUDCC accomplished at
present.

“To say that the Vice President hasn’t done
anything yet is a big lie. Just take a look at the various relocation
sites where informal settlers have become legitimate landowners is a
proof that De Castro has already done a lot,” he added.
De Castro yesterday inspected Northville 8 in
barangay Bangkal, Malolos, Bulacan, the relocation for some 2,600
informal settlers affected by the Northrail project in the said town.

Impressed by the fast construction of houses
and roads, De Castro lauded the Malolos local government headed by
Domingo and took time to inspire barangay officials to be more involved
in the shelter program.
“I hope that other local governments can
duplicate what Mayor Domingo is doing right now here in Malolos,” De
Castro said.

During the inspection, De Castro learned that
131 families have already transferred from the railways to the
relocation site. Full development of the site is expected to be
accomplished by the end of October.
